Automobile Landscape
Solo exhibition at Sala Caja Inmaculada (CAI). September 2010. Cádiz, Spain.

This project approaches the problematic surrounding the automobile as an economic, industrial and social symbol of modern and developed societies. The car is one of the fundamental parts of culture in 20th century, and by extension, of an industrial and consumist society. The transformation carried out in the landscape by and for the car has created a “landscape of automobile” which allows us to reflect upon its role in a context which goes beyond the range of aesthetics extending itself to social, political and anthropological considerations.

The landscapes of motorways, parking lots, intersections, gas stations, service stations make up this “landscape of automobile”; a landscape which has been necessary for the implementation and use of the car by society. These landscapes reveal the strange and enigmatic to us; they lack human presence, therefore, are alienating, but despite this, close to us, for they are part of our everyday life.

This project aims to explore and study these “landscape of automobile” in order to reflect upon its current state as well as explore its aesthetical and symbolic values. Would it be possible to give meaning and a sense of place to a landscape that is transitory by definition? Landscape, and our relationship with it, is a cultural construction, and therefore, ours to ponder upon.
